HOME :: RESORTS ABROAD :: THAILAND
In Thailand tourism is a strong and ramified industry, substantially supported by the state and bringing it the biggest part of its foreign currency income. The tourism role has grown increasingly after the Asian economic crisis, which provoked considerable damages to the industry branches, producing goods for export.
Thailand also accepted tourists in the past, but before the Indochina war all the travel business structure was oriented to rich clients. The war changed the situation to the favor of mass servicing.
Today Thailand has a lot of hotels of different levels (only Pattaia may simultaneously accommodate almost one million people). Hotels are built in the places most visited by tourists: in Bangkok, Pattaia, Raiong, on the Phuket Island, Samui Island, in Krabi, Huahin and Ciaam. But even less known places host hotels of four star level, for example in Nonghai (town near the border with Laos) and in Mesaia (at the border with Burma). In time, the country formed its own travel features. At present, predominantly Germans, Englishmen, Chinese and South Koreans pass their holidays in Thailand, during the whole year.
The major part of tourists comes to Thailand to rest by the sea. The main "travel point" stays Pattaia.
Pattaia is also favorable to Russian speaking travelers: you may see signs in Russian everywhere, menu in Russian in restaurants of any of the world’s cuisines, even "bar girls" speak two-three sentences in Russian (not always adequate). Pattaia hosts five Russian restaurants, a Russian karaoke (by the way, Russian songs are almost in every karaoke). Several tabloid type newspapers in Russian are published during the season. Pattaia is nice, because you may pass your holiday here with minimal expenses, still the persons, used to comfort and even luxury, will find here all the necessary conditions. You may rest in the city, on the beaches of the southern suburb of Pattaia - Ciomtiena or on the coral islands, located less than a kilometer from the shore. You may find places of almost untouched nature, from which, still, you may get back to "civilization" in less than half an hour by car or by boat.
Other resorts are somewhat more expensive. Phuket and Samui Islands also formed something like a Russian service atmosphere. Such an atmosphere is however almost absent in Huahin - aristocratic resort, even if a little boring (clean sea water, extraordinary hotels, tennis and golf), and in Ciaama, where most part of the travel infrastructure targets Thais.
During your stay at the sea almost at any resort you will have the opportunity to learn to dive with an aqualung, and for those, already knowing how to do that, to enjoy long underwater walks. Groups of enterprising Thais work on the shore almost all the time, letting "jet-skis" (hydro-jet fast scooters) and proposing you to fly with a paraglide ("roped" parachute, pulled by a boat) over the surrounding territories or to fly with a moto delta plan. We ask you to remember, that these "transport units" are not insured and you go on a ride with a scooter or fly, being insured only with your own insurance of accidents (if you hold one).
The routes in the mountainous north of Thailand are very little mastered at the moment, even if they offer not less exotic sensations, than the rest by the sea. A walk by the slopes of mountains on elephant backs - highlight of all travel programs visiting Ciangmai and Ciangrai - is one thing worth mentioning. Many people are put on guard by the necessity to pay the flight to Ciangmai and back, but this way may also be passed by train (one night, the train is clean, air conditioned, the service is really good).
It is interesting to visit the parks and restaurants, where the program includes cultural-historical shows of performances with elephants (Rose Garden not far from Bankok, Nong Nooch not far from Pattaia, "Elephant villages" and the "Kantok" traditional dinner in Ciangmai). The program of the stay in Bangkok obligatorily includes a visit to the temple of Emerald Buddha, the Great Royal Palace and Bangkok’s temples.
Thailand is also famous as a centre of popular medicine. The Thai relaxing and recuperating massage is known all over the world (in English it is called Traditional Thai Massage. All the others - Body to body massage, Tora course, Special oil massage and others - are all erotic entertainments with different levels of complexity). Thai massage exists for several hundreds of years. It is mostly concentrating on the nervous nodes of the body and on articulations, as well as on the relaxation of the muscles of feet and hands. A lot of joints appeared lately offering massage by feet (Foot massage) and by palms (Palm massage). These - are old Chinese massage methods, which are now popular in Thailand. Specialists of "Supreme Massage" - Thai manual therapists are also well known (this is the most complicated type of traditional Thai massage, practiced over centuries in Buddhist monasteries). Traditional massage salons may be found almost everywhere in Thailand, and good specialists may be found even in the most provincial towns. However, if you need to use the services of highly skilled professionals of traditional Thai massage, we recommend that you visit the Vat Pho monastery in Bangkok.
Holidays in Thailand:
5 December - birthday of King Pumipon Aduliadet - state holiday of Thailand. On 3 December within the frame of this beautiful ceremony on the Royal Square in Bangkok the elite corps of the Royal guard solemnly confirm their oath to the head of state. Festivities are carried out all throughout the country on 5 December. All the administrative buildings are ornamented with illumination devices. During the night, Bangkok, in the area of the Great Royal Palace and Raciadamnen Avenue, transforms in a fantastic spectacle of fire of different colors. Father’s day is celebrated on the same day.
10 December - Constitution day (in the memory of the 1 Constitution of the country, revised many times afterwards).
31 December - New Year’s Eve.
1 January - New Year.
February - the day of the full moon - Maha Bucia holiday. 1250 Buddha’s pupils came to him on that day. Buddha pronounced a speech that became famous in front of them - maha bucia.
6 April - holiday in the memory of foundation in 1782 of the Ciakri dynasty.
Middle of April - Thai New Year, or the Water feast - Songkran (ZopdKgap).
It is an event, which can not be missed. On this day everyone pours water over each other, which is very amusing and pleasant, given that this is the hottest period of the year. Everyone tries to pour clean water or water, mixed with talc. Still, nobody is safeguarded against surprises. In the frame of ceremonial wetting of a person of a higher status one uses water, aromatized with flowers. These days all the country’s hotels are usually packed. In Pattaia, to the tourists’ pleasure, Songkran is celebrated twice, named "the second episode" of the day of Pattaia. The problem is, that the biggest part of the servicing personnel, drivers, hotel services workers, ladies from bars and massage salons, beach service, are not usually inhabitants of Pattaia, they come to work in the capital from distant provincial towns and villages, and that is why on the day of New Year (and namely 4-5 holidays in a row) they tend to go home, to visit their relatives. But it may not be allowed that tourists be left without Songkran! And you may entertain yourselves and earn good money (tips are flowing this day).
1 May - Labor day, refers only to workers, government workers stay at work.
5 May - day of crowning of Pumipon Aduliadet.
May - Visakha Bucia - ceremony, carried out in the time of full moon: birthday, enlightenment and pass to nirvana of Buddha (all these happened on the same day, but in different years). This is one of the most respected holidays in Buddhism.
May - Festival of the first furrow (of Hindus provenience). The date of its first celebration is set by Brahmans-astrologists. Five buffalos, harnessed in a ceremonial plough, are passed through the Royal Square (Sanam-Luang), located in front of the temple of Emerald Buddha and the Great Royal Palace. Consecrated rice granules are thrown into the furrow and buffalos are offered food, put in several cups. White buffalos are considered holly and belong only to the crown. After their behavior monks determine whether the following harvest will be good.
Beginning of July - Asalaha Bucia - one more full moon. On this day Buddha addressed with its first preach to its first students. Also on this day monks retire for the period of the Buddhist fast in temples, from where they come out only in October, at the end of the rain season, for the Ok Phansa festival (end of the fast).
12 August - birthday of Queen Sirikit.
23 October - memory day of King Rama V.
Non-working days are considered the birthday of King Rama V, birthday of the king that is now on the throne, and the birthday of the queen (these holidays are also named Father’s and Mother’s day. When they come, honors are granted not only to the king and queen, but also to parents).
Sunday is always a non-working day. On Saturday administrative institutions and banks do not work, and private firms usually work till noon. Malls and most of the stores work without holidays during all the festival days.
Holidays, not considered non-working days:
February - Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar. In the week all stores do not work except shopping centers.
November - Loi Krathong, it is celebrated at fool moon. At the time of this festival thousands of boats (krathongs), made of banana leafs and constructed from any floating materials, in the form of lotus flowers, which put into the river vanish with the fall of night. All boats with candles are taken away by the river flow, and last year’s sins vanish together with them. A performance with light and sound effects takes place in Sukhotai between the ruins, and a big annual holiday takes place in Ciangmai.
